Bitkom statement about the current data theft
Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder explains the current theft of numerous private data from politicians and celebrities:
"A lot is unknown about the current data theft, so we warn against hasty recriminations and political shots. First of all, it must be a matter of clarifying the situation immediately and ensuring transparency. The focus must be on restoring the protection of the privacy of those currently affected in the best possible way and locating the perpetrators with all available means of forensics and holding them accountable. The Bitkom companies can also support this.
Security thrives on participation, because every security chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The companies are challenged to harden their products and to provide their employees with up-to-date IT security training. Politicians are called upon to optimize the legal framework in such a way that end-to-end encryption can still be used. In addition, it should instruct the authorities to always immediately report known security gaps to the affected companies instead of keeping them open so that they can use them themselves as backdoors. And each and every one of us is required to actively use available security tools such as strong passwords, virus scanners, firewalls and regular updates. Bitkom recommends in particular the use of so-called two-factor authentication, which many consumers still do without at present".
