Matthias Bergt heads the unit I B at the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information. With his team, he is in charge of almost all of Berlin's businesses. Before joining the Berlin data protection supervisory authority in 2019, he worked as a lawyer – including as a partner – at von BOETTICHER Rechtsanwälte. Before that, he was a judge at the District Court of Hamburg. Matthias Bergt contributes to the Kühling/Buchner commentary to the GDPR as well as to the Koreng/Lachenmann form book data protection law and to the Schuster/Grützmacher commentary on IT law. The German business newspaper Handelsblatt voted him among Germany's best lawyers from 2016 to 2019, Best Lawyers from 2017 to 2020, and Who's Who Legal included him in "Who's Who Legal Data" Editions 2018 to 2020 and in "Who's Who Legal Germany" Editions 2019 to 2020.
